  • Grand Bahia Principe Bavaro. We celebrated our 25th at this resort June 18-25, 2015, and I cannot say enough good things about this resort, from the check-in to the check-out, everything was just perfect.

  • This is a fabulous resort, our 2nd time staying at a Riu, and I am sold on Riu. Our bar and frig were stocked daily, the food is awesome, and there are several Riu resorts clustered together. There are buses that give a free ride to the huge mall about 45 minutes away.

  • We visited Dreams Punta Cana Resort & Spa in June 2015. The rooms are nice but a little on the small side. The food, drinks, entertainment and staff are just great.

General Information About Punta Cana

The sugary sand of a Punta Cana beach is so soft, so perfectly golden that you might think it was synthetic. And in fact, in this easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic, it's possible. By definition, Punta Cana is a manufactured Caribbean getaway, completely catering to the needs of sun-seeking vacationers who like all-inclusive resorts but care little about venturing away from their hotel.

Punta Cana

Punta Cana is the name of a region in the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic. Covering about 420,000 m2 (approximately 1,100 acres), the region is home to a coastline of sandy white beaches and to a "town" of the same name. Located in the province of La Altagracia and population estimated at 100,000, the region borders the Atlantic Ocean to the east. To the north, it borders Bávaro and El Cortecito beaches. It also limits with Cabeza de Toro, Cabo Engaño and further west with Juanillo. Despite the area being fairly deserted, the proximity of Punta Cana to other major resort areas such as Bávaro and Uvero Alto make the town one of the top Caribbean destinations. Peak Season: Peak season in Punta Cana tends to run from December to April. Prices in both airfare and hotel increase dramatically during these times, while dropping in the summer and early fall months. But this area is not only popular for its abundant lodging and comprehensive amenities — Punta Cana beckons to jet-setters because it provides so many options (more than 24,000 hotel rooms) for such affordable rates. Many travelers are able to book a weeklong trip that includes airfare, lodging, meals and some resort activities, for much less than $1,000 per person in the shoulder seasons. While this destination isn't necessarily the most extreme, visitors can get their fill of thrills hiking to Hoyo Azul or taking on challenging golf courses like Punta Espada or La Cana. Overall, this reasonably priced, Caribbean hideout is made for travelers of all ages seeking a relaxing turn from the norm.

Punta Cana Climate

Punta Cana has a tropical climate. Although it is mildly windy, the ocean in the area is mainly shallow, with several natural marine pools in which visitors can bathe. The weather is fairly constant, with an average temperature of 26°C. The hottest season lasts from April to November, and during the day temperatures might reach 32°C. From December to March, temperatures during the evening are around 20°C. Very little rain falls around the area, mostly because of the flat landscape. The summer months tend to be very warm and very humid. It is suggested to wear loose fitting, cotton clothing – so pack light.

Excursions in Punta Cana

  1. Punta Cana, the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic, abutting the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, is a region known for its 32km stretch of beaches and clear waters. The Bávaro area and Punta Cana combine to form what's known as La Costa del Coco, or the Coconut Coast, land of lavish, all-inclusive resorts. It's popular for zip-lining, windsurfing, kayaking and sailing.

Punta Cana Culture

imageframe-image

Culture

Punta Cana is the major resort and tourist area of the Dominican Republic, and a top Caribbean vacation destination. As such, the culture is generally relaxed and almost entirely geared toward tourists. If you want to immerse yourself in the true culture of the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana would probably not be your first choice. However, if you want a fun vacation destination with white sandy beaches and luxurious all-inclusive resorts (there are about 40-50 AI resorts along a 25-mile stretch of beach) and a Caribbean atmosphere, Punta Cana is a great choice. It’s said to be slightly cheaper than many other Caribbean destinations as well. Punta Cana is relatively secluded, with nothing one could really call a “town,” but the beaches are known for their beauty, and it is the feeling of being isolated from the world that keeps so many tourists coming back to Punta Cana. Punta Cana has a bit more of a European feel (topless beaches, for example) to it than other parts of the Caribbean, and many staff members at the hotels might speak broken English (Spanish is the primary language), although it has been becoming somewhat more “Globalized” in recent years.

History

Punta Cana is a popular resort area in the Dominican Republic, which is located on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. The Dominican Republic shares the island with the country of Haiti. Punta Cana is located on the far eastern point of the Dominican Republic in the province of Altagracia and is one of the Caribbean's most popular resort areas. Before the coming of the Spanish, the island was populated by Taino Indians who had called it home for hundreds of years. Eastern Hispaniola became a springboard for the Spanish to conquer much of the Americas after Columbus discovered and claimed the area on his first voyage in 1492. The Spanish conceded the western portion of Hispaniola to the French, the territory which is now Haiti. In the early 19th Century, The Dominican Republic, then known as Santo Domingo, fought to win its independence from Spain but was instead conquered and ruled by Haiti for over 20 years. The country's government was finally able to declare independence in 1844, only to voluntarily return to the fold of the Spanish Empire 20 years later, and then become independent again two years after that. For a brief time the country was ruled by a United States-led military government, from 1916 to 1924. In the early 1930's the country was then taken over by the brutal dictator, Raphael Trujillo, who was assassinated in 1961. Since Trujillo's death, the county has had major economic troubles. There are many Dominican immigrants living the United States today. The country is also known for its baseball players, many of whom play in the US Major Leagues.

Punta Cana Nightlife

Punta Cana Nightlife

A lot of the best nightlife in Punta Cana is at the resorts, as the big all-inclusives tend to have live entertainment, beach parties, casinos and multiple bars for dancing and/or relaxing with a cold drink. This is part of the reason why you might consider splurging on accommodations if it means the biggest party in town is conveniently right outside your room. If you leave your hotel, you're still likely to encounter tourists, but different ones, and you'll see locals, too. Through your concierge, pre-arrange a taxi pickup time to ensure you get back safely as hailing a cab doesn't really happen. Plan to be out late, because midnight is when the party gets going in Punta Cana and many places stay open past 4AM.
